Not Ourselves, but the Cause

The Daughters of the British Empire (DBE) is a charitable, non-profit, non-political, non-sectarian, voluntary American society of women of Commonwealth of Nations birth or ancestry. Our members are professionals, businesswomen, and homemakers with common interests and heritage, who meet regularly for business and social events with the common cause of philanthropy.

OUR CAUSES

Florida’s DBE local chapters support many local charities. Members donate in cash, and ‘in kind’ (bought and handcrafted items), hours of time, and miles of driving. Most of Florida’s donations go to support our Mountbatten House District Home for seniors. Historically, DBE raised enough to provide an airplane, mobile kitchens, ambulances, surgical instruments, thousands of miles of rolled bandages, other such supplies, and food & clothes; and Florida alone is documented as providing over five tons of clothing…..and to this day we save pennies! (Click on the images below to learn more.)

As of 2023, one of our members runs for charity, and we donate to these charities. See picture and information below for the 2023 Skyway Bridge run.

2024 We added support for another charity run, Mammoth March and their partner OneTreePlanted, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization https://onetreeplanted.org/ dedicated to global reforestation by planting trees to restore nature & biodiversity. Sandringham’s registered hiker means one more tree planted in the US this year.

The smiley-face blue backpack is Sandringham’s hiker.

Left to right, she is starting with all the other hikers; she is passing the first mile; she is all alone at Mile 8.

We Celebrated Autumn, Thanksgiving, Christmas, with our friends and family!

Queen Mary 2 Chapter’s fundraiser was a success; many thanks to everyone who contributed by buying a seasonal item.

Sandringham Chapter would also like to send many thanks to everyone who contributed to our Amaryllis fundraiser.

We plan to contribute ALL the results of our fundraising to our local charities, as well as our primary charity, Mountbatten House.

THE ACADEMY OF ST.MARTIN IN THE FIELDS COMES TO FLORIDA

17TH MARCH TO 7TH APRIL

One of the UK’s great cultural exports, the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, is leaving Trafalgar Square in London for the month of March and is coming to the USA for an extensive tour from coast-to-coast.   Under the direction of their Music Director, the virtuoso violinist Joshua Bell, they will be playing sixteen different concert venues, in programmes that include the Brahms Violin Concerto and Schumann’s Second Symphony.   More details of the tour can be found here as can details of their forthcoming ‘Marriner 100’ commemorations, marking the centenary of their Founder, Sir Neville Marriner.  If you would like to find out more about this tour or about this world-class chamber orchestra’s work in general then please feel free to email chrismartin@asmf.org in the ASMF team and he’s sure to be able to help.

SOUTHERN DISTRICT ORGANISERS

The Southern District Organisers of the DBE held their 2023 Meeting in Knoxville, Tennessee, Friday and Saturday Oct 20 – 22nd. The Friday night Welcome Reception was a nice get-together with food, wine, and catch-ups with other members. Saturday’s business meeting was informative and fun — it’s good to see what other states are doing for fundraising, frienship and fun. The Tennessee ladies gave us a great and fun dinner at the Tennessee Winery.

Sandringham Chapter member Tara (1320) on the Skyway Bridge marathon. she always runs the 10K in March, the Skyway Bridge Race, in honor of her brother Peter, a 20-year-old soldier in the British Army, killed by a drunk driver in 1991.
